Living Systems
Type-4 life is a name for organic life. It tends to reproduce itself, (human males and others excepted) and depend on ego or self-interest to be in existence. A water glass is a form of type-5 life and you will notice that it is neither squishy nor egotistical. It depends on others for its reproduction. If you have an attractive glass, friends will ask about it and ask for it at the shops in town. This demand, external to the glass itself, is what causes the glass to be reproduced, not any self-aggrandizement.

So far, we have discussed type-5 life as being void of emotions (i.e. the water glass or your roomba vacuum cleaner).
Does type-5 life have to be void of emotions?
The robosapien appears to have minimal emotions in order to interact with it's users.
Another thought: We see robots without emotions doing work all the time (i.e. robotic arms in car manufacturing facilities, cars, etc...they are everywhere), but we only really react when they display emotion. It seems that emotion can only really be displayed visually with a face. Robots are coming out with more facial expressions and preprogramed emotions, which 'wow' more and more people because emotions are what people react to and can relate to.
Another question: Does emotion have to be present for survival of a species, even in type-5 life? Have we proven that type-5 life can survive without emotions for extended periods of time yet?
